IELTS in Baku 2026: Registration, Fees, Test Centres, and a 12-Week Prep Plan
Where to register for IELTS in Baku, how much it costs, which test centres run it — plus a 12-week prep plan that takes you from B1 to a 6.5 band score. The full guide from Inlingua Baku teachers.
IELTS is the most commonly taken international English exam in Azerbaijan — needed for university admissions, work visas, and migration. Inlingua Baku teachers lay out 2026 registration, fees, test centres, and the exact 12-week prep plan that takes B1 learners to a 6.5 band score.
What is IELTS and why do you need it?
IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is the most widely accepted English exam in the world. Two versions:
- Academic IELTS — for university admission (undergraduate, master's).
- General Training IELTS — for Canadian, Australian, New Zealand and UK migration and work visas.
Both exams have 4 sections: Listening (30 min), Reading (60 min), Writing (60 min), Speaking (11–14 min). Scored 0–9. Most universities require 6.0–6.5; Cambridge and Oxford require 7.5+.
How to register for IELTS in Baku
In Azerbaijan, IELTS is run by two accredited organisations:
- British Council Azerbaijan — Landmark Building, 96 Nizami Street, Baku. Academic and General Training, both paper and computer.
- IDP IELTS — multiple Baku locations, mostly computer-based.
Register online at ielts.britishcouncil.org or ieltsidpasia.com. You need a passport, a photo, and payment. Test dates are 2–3 weeks after registration.
IELTS fees in Baku (2026)
- Paper-based: ~400–420 AZN
- Computer-based: ~420–450 AZN
- UKVI IELTS (UK visa): ~500–550 AZN
Prices can shift with the dollar — check the current fee on the official site.
Paper or computer?
For most of our students, computer-based is the better choice. Reasons:
- Results in 3–5 days (13 days for paper).
- More test dates available.
- Writing is faster and easier to edit on a computer.
- Quieter room — every candidate has headphones.
Choose paper if you write faster by hand and are not used to typing in English.
The 4 IELTS sections — what each tests
Listening (30 min)
Four passages: everyday conversation, monologue, academic discussion, lecture. Answers are recorded simultaneously. Most common mistake: missing the next question while checking your previous answer.
Reading (60 min)
Three passages, 40 questions. Academic features popular-science articles; General Training uses ads, formal letters, and features. Strategy: there's no time to read everything — scan based on the question.
Writing (60 min)
Two tasks:
- Task 1 (20 min, 150 words): Academic — describe a chart/diagram; General — write a letter.
- Task 2 (40 min, 250 words): essay — argument, discussion, opinion.
Biggest point loss: Task 2 under 250 words — automatic penalty.
Speaking (11–14 min)
Three parts: introduction, 2-minute monologue (cue card), abstract discussion. You speak to a live examiner, not a computer. Recorded. Speaking scores change least — hard to raise in 3 months, so prioritise it early.
12-week prep plan (B1 → 6.5)
The concrete schedule we run in the Inlingua Baku exam prep course:
- Weeks 1–2 (diagnostic + foundations): full diagnostic test (which sections are weak?), 8 full Listening and Reading tests.
- Weeks 3–6 (Reading + Listening focus): 4 full Reading passages + 4 Listening tests/week. 15 Academic Word List (AWL) words/day.
- Weeks 7–8 (Writing intensive): one essay per day. Teacher bands and corrects each essay. This is where many students jump from 5.5 to 6.5.
- Weeks 9–10 (Speaking intensive): 3 simulations/week. Cue cards in writing + speaking.
- Weeks 11–12 (polish): 3–4 full mock tests, strategy tuning, mental prep.
Daily time: 2 hours. Weekly: 14 hours. If this is too much, 6.5 isn't realistic in 12 weeks — change the timeline or target.
Realistic IELTS scores by starting level
| Starting CEFR | Score in 3 months | Score in 6 months |
|---|---|---|
| A2 | 4.5–5.0 | 5.5–6.0 |
| B1 | 5.5–6.0 | 6.5–7.0 |
| B2 | 6.5–7.0 | 7.5–8.0 |
| C1 | 7.5–8.0 | 8.5+ |
So A2 to 7.0 is not doable in 12 weeks — minimum 9–12 months. Without a teacher, add 50% to every timeline.
Self-study or sign up for a course?
Self-study works only if:
- You're already at B2+;
- Someone will give you Writing and Speaking feedback — without it you lose 0.5–1.0 band;
- You can commit 2 consistent hours a day.
For most students a course is faster — a teacher corrects every essay, rates every Speaking answer live, and teaches the specific strategy you're missing.
Our English Exam Preparation course runs 12 weeks, 3 lessons per week, 90 minutes each. Free placement test: WhatsApp +994 77 642 08 04.
FAQ
Starting at B1, what score can I get in 3 months?
Realistic: 5.5–6.0 in 3 months. 6.5 needs about 5 months. 7.0+ needs 8–10 months.
How long is an IELTS score valid?
Two years. After that, universities and visa offices require a fresh test.
Do I get a refund if I miss IELTS?
Full refund if you cancel 5+ weeks before. 50% between 2 and 5 weeks. Under 2 weeks — nothing.
Can I take IELTS online?
Academic IELTS now has an IELTS Online version taken from home. But most universities don't yet accept it — check your target school first.
IELTS or TOEFL — which is better in Baku?
IELTS is far more accessible in Azerbaijan — 4–5 test dates a week, 2 centres. TOEFL runs fewer dates and costs about 20% more. Pick IELTS in Baku.
What happens if I write under 250 words in Writing?
Automatic 0.5–1.0 band penalty. 180–200 words caps Task 2 at about 5.5.
