How to Choose an English Course in Baku (2026 Guide)
With 50+ English schools in Baku, how do you pick the right one? A 2026 checklist: class size, teacher certification, methodology, placement tests, price transparency. Seven questions to ask before signing up.
Baku has 50+ English schools — how do you pick the right one? Short answer: focus on three things first — class size, teacher certification, and methodology. Price comes last. As Inlingua Baku teachers with 20 years in this market, we've put together a checklist of what actually matters in 2026.
Why choosing an English course in Baku is hard
The market is opaque. The same "general English course" costs 80 AZN/month at one centre and 300 AZN at another. Teacher certifications rarely appear on websites. Half the schools advertising "native speaker teachers" don't actually have any. You're told groups are 6 people and then find yourself in a room of 15. You have to ask the right questions and verify yourself.
The 6 criteria that matter
1. Class size (6–10 students is the sweet spot)
This is the most critical factor — and the one most often misrepresented. In a 15-person group, each student gets just 4 minutes of speaking time per lesson. In an 8-person group, 10 minutes. That's two completely different courses. Ask before you sign up: "What's the real maximum group size?" — and if possible, sit in on a sample lesson and count.
2. Teacher certification (CELTA, TEFL, DELTA)
Knowing English isn't the same as teaching it. A qualified teacher should hold CELTA (Cambridge), TEFL, or DELTA — these are the international standards. "Our teacher lived in America for 10 years" isn't a substitute. Ask directly: "Can I see the teacher's certification?"
3. Methodology (communicative, not translation-based)
The two main approaches:
- Communicative method (CLT): English from lesson one, grammar taught in context. The Inlingua method is built on this.
- Translation-grammar method: old-school Soviet style — rules first, then translating sentences from Azerbaijani/Russian into English. Produces very weak speaking skills.
Ask which method they use. If the answer is vague, walk away.
4. Placement testing
A good school runs a placement test before enrolling you — to fix your CEFR level (A1–C2). Without it, how do they pick your group? "You look like A2" is not professional. At Inlingua Baku, the placement test is free.
5. Classroom and extras
Classrooms should be well-lit with fresh air, a whiteboard, projector, and books. Some centres also offer a Conversation Club, library, or international exam prep centre — a big plus. Visit the building before you enrol.
6. Price and price transparency
2026 price ranges for general English courses in Baku:
- Budget (40–80 AZN/month): 15–20 student groups, uncertified teachers, translation method. Doesn't build speaking.
- Mid-tier (100–200 AZN/month): 8–12 students, some certified teachers, mixed methodology.
- Premium (250–450 AZN/month): 6–10 students, fully certified team, communicative method, exam prep available.
Watch out: "30 AZN/month" often reflects partial pricing. Ask: "Total cost for the whole term?" and "Are books, exams, and registration extra?"

FAQ
What's the cheapest English course in Baku?
Some courses run 40–60 AZN/month, but typically with 15+ student groups and uncertified teachers. Weigh "cheap" against "effective" — if you haven't learned the language after 6 months, that 40 AZN is money wasted.
Are there native-speaker English courses in Baku?
Yes, a few centres employ native speakers. But being a native speaker isn't the decisive factor — experience and methodology matter more. A highly certified Azerbaijani teacher often outperforms an uncertified native speaker.
Which course is best for school kids?
For ages 6–17, our English for Children & Teens is structured around school load: 2 lessons/week, 60–75 minutes each.
Are online courses cheaper and better?
Online courses are cheaper (30–100 AZN/month) but speaking skills develop slowly. Recommendation: hybrid — 1 live + 1 online lesson per week gives the best result.
Should a course charge a registration fee?
A 20–50 AZN registration fee (for books and materials) is normal. Avoid centres that charge 100+ AZN.
Can I switch groups?
At a good school, yes — if the pace doesn't suit you in the first 2 weeks, talk to management and change. Ask about this before enrolling.
