How to Start Speaking Russian — 30-Day Plan (2026)
You can start speaking Russian in 30 days with a concrete weekly plan. Real phrases, common questions, common mistakes — Inlingua Baku guide.
Spoken Russian is a completely different skill from grammar. Students who spent 6 months on textbooks still struggle to answer "how are you". This guide walks you through a 30-day plan from zero to basic conversation. Focus: speaking and listening. Reading and writing come later.
Why 30 days is enough
The key to A1-A2 conversation isn't grammar mastery — it's automatic recognition of 200-300 ready-made phrases. That's how children learn their native language: at age 2 there's no grammar, just phrases like "I want", "don't", "let's go". This guide follows the same path — 250 phrases in 30 days plus the ability to swap words inside them.
Week 1: alphabet + 30 essential phrases
Days 1-3: Cyrillic alphabet
You don't need to write to speak, but you need to recognise words. 15 minutes a day, and in 3 days you'll read all 33 letters. Full guide with pronunciation: Russian Alphabet PDF (AZ-language).
Days 4-7: 30 essential phrases
Five phrases a day, spoken aloud. No writing required. Start with greetings, self-intro, please/thank you/sorry, "I don't understand", "how much", "where is". Repeat each phrase 5 times a day out loud (in the car, in the shower, walking). The brain memorises by repetition, not reading.
Week 2: questions and answers (50 phrases total)
Add 20 question-answer pairs around the 5 core question words: Kto/Chto (who/what), Gde (where), Kogda (when), Skolko (how much), Pochemu (why). For each question, learn 3-4 typical answers. Example: "Where do you work?" → "in an office / in a shop / at home / in a bank".
Week 3: connectors + longer sentences (100 total)
Now combine phrases with connectors:
- и (and), но (but), потому что (because)
- если (if), тоже (also), уже (already), ещё (yet, more)
By end of week 3 you have 100 phrases + 7 connectors = real A1 communication.
Week 4: role-plays + real conversation
Fifteen minutes a day, one situation:
- Day 22 — café: order menu, ask for the bill.
- Day 23 — taxi: give address, say "stop here".
- Day 24 — shop: ask price, size.
- Day 25 — stranger asking directions: reply "straight, then left".
- Day 26 — phone: "Hello, this is Ali, can I speak with Anya?"
- Day 27 — restaurant: allergies — "I'm allergic to nuts".
- Day 28 — doctor: "My head hurts / my throat hurts".
- Days 29-30 — real person: 5-minute chat with a Russian speaker in Baku.
For simulated practice, use ChatGPT Voice Mode and ask it to role-play in Russian: "Let's play: you're a waiter in a Russian restaurant, I'm the customer."
5 places in Baku to practise Russian
- Central-district markets (Yasamal, Nərimanov) — shop assistants often prefer Russian.
- Bolt / Uber taxis — half the drivers are more comfortable in Russian.
- Cafés in the Torgovaya area — many waiters speak Russian.
- Yasamal Park & Fountains Square — "Excuse me, where is..." conversations with locals.
- Language exchange groups — search "Baku Language Exchange" on Instagram / Telegram.
5 common mistakes
- Learning by reading only — passive reading doesn't build speaking. Repeat out loud.
- Jumping into grammar too early — cases (падежи) belong to B1, not A1-A2.
- Ignoring stress marks — "мукá" (flour) vs "мýка" (torment) — same spelling, different meaning.
- Fear of mistakes — Baku Russian speakers forgive AZ accents. Perfect Russian is a 5-year goal, not day-30.
- 3-hour weekend cramming — 20 minutes daily beats 3 hours once a week.

FAQ
Is it really possible to speak Russian in 30 days?
A1 basic conversation — yes. Shopping, taxi directions, café ordering. Complex dialogue (business, politics) takes 6+ months.
Where can I download free Russian conversation PDFs?
Inlingua Baku hosts three: alphabet, 100 words, cases. Commercial textbooks (Doroga v Rossiyu, Russkiy Razgovornik) — buy through official publishers or Baku bookstores. Avoid pirate sites.
Do I need grammar for speaking?
Not for the first 100 phrases. Definitely yes for B1+. But grammar comes after speaking, not before.
How do I learn Russian stress correctly?
Mark stress on every new word. "хорошó" (good) — unstressed О sounds like А, so "хорошó" reads "xaraşó". Build this habit from month one.
How do I find a good Russian teacher in Baku?
